DIY AT HOME FACIAL EXFOLIATION REGIMEN

Updated: Jan 13, 2020

There is a simple and common Nigerian saying “better soup na money kill am” which literally means, "Anything good is expensive". This saying is absolutely true except in some aspects where most people disagree. And I am one of them.

I think this is the reason there are DIY kinds of stuff for us to do.

I believe you can have a rich skin irrespective of your financial buoyancy.

I also believe the African skin is the most sensitive and expensive skin to maintain in the world. But most of us do not know that. It can be attacked by any skin conditions easily when poorly taken care of, which is why we have lots of products in our bathrooms and on our dressing mirrors. But it can also be cheap to take care off if we are willing to invest time, effort, patience and commitment into our skin.

Now a little about exfoliation

Exfoliation

This is the gradual removal of the dead unwanted skin cells from the top layer of the skin to reveal a new rejuvenated young skin. It helps boost your skin collagen, unclog pores which help with breakouts. It also clears many skin disorders and It makes your skin look younger with no fine lines and wrinkles while making your skin silky smooth.

This can be done by a professional (which will cost a lot of money) or you could do it yourself at home with things you might find lying around in your kitchen.

My first recipe is my favourite since I have an acne prone oily skin.

TURMERIC SCRUB

1 Tsp. baking powder or baking soda

1 Tsp. lemon or lime juice

1 Tsp. Honey

1 Tbsp. turmeric powder

1 clean bowl

Place the baking powder in a bowl, then add the lime or lemon juice and allow it to fizz out then stir. Then add the honey and stir. And finally, add the turmeric powder and stir well.

Now gently massage the mixture on face and neck for one to five minutes in a circular motion and let sit till it dries. Then gently scrub it away. Rinse off and use your favourite soap and warm water to get the turmeric stain off your skin. Afterwards pat face and neck dry with a clean towel and moisturize.

MILK PEELING MASK

2 Tsp. gelatine

2 Tbsp. milk

Applicator brush

Microwavable bowl

Mix the milk and gelatine in the bowl and microwave on medium heat for a minute or place the bowl of the mixture in a pot of boiling water till the gelatine has fully melted and incorporated with the milk.

Now using the applicator brush gently apply the mixture to face avoiding hairlines, eyelashes, and eyebrows. Let dry for a minute and keep applying layers till you are satisfied. Then allow the mask to dry before gently peeling it off the face. Rinse your face with warm water and moisturize.

Note

This might be a little painful but its worth it as it helps remove facial hair, unclogs pore and remove the dead skin while smoothing out the skin

SUGAR OR SALT SCRUB

1 Tbsp. sugar (any kind) or Salt (choose which you prefer)

1 Tsp. honey

2 Tsp. lime or lemon juice

1 bowl

In this case, we are going to do it a little different than the normal way.

First, pour all ingredients into the bowl and mix well till the sugar is fully melted or heat the mixture up on low heat and don’t allow it boil till sugar is fully melted. Let it cool off to touch then apply in circular motion to face and let it dry then use a wet cloth or soft sponge and gently lift up the mixture from the face and neck in a circular motion. Rinse off, towel dry and moisturize.

IMPORTANT

After each exfoliation, it is better to calm skin with some soothing skincare products such luscious products or you could use rose water any calming cream or oil.

Also, do these regimens at least twice a week for maximum result and don’t forget to cover your skin when in the sun or apply sunscreen.

Also, these regimens can be done on any skin types.
